The
fundamental playing field upon which many location
dependent decisions are made by government and business
is the map. Traditionally, these have been paper
maps showing infrastructure (roads, political
boundaries, parks, etc.) and little else. Today,
decisions are made in a dynamic world, where changes
occur daily. Thus, there is a need for a new
playing field – a digital map that shows not only
infrastructure but all buildings, property boundaries
and hazards as well. |

| From
a geographic perspective, this type of analysis is not
unique. The same requirement for complex,
multidimensional data analysis has been present in other
industrial sectors for many years. The two sectors
in which the digital geographic based investigation has
represented a core technology are in petroleum and
mineral exploration. Over the last twenty years,
these industries have embraced the desktop computer,
utilizing the most sophisticated graphic workstations to
visualize surface and subsurface conditions.
Improvements in productivity have been dramatic allowing
these industries to increase output while reducing costs. |

| The
graphic above is a sample of a telecommunications
application in which data from numerous sources was
integrated into a single easily understood display of
information. The same analytical techniques can be
applied to extract information and intelligence that
otherwise is obscured. Using this exploration
paradigm, Terra-Vista has created a series of products,
which give managers in government and business the
ability to communicate information and make decisions
derived from complex data. |
